A conservator is an individual, corporation, or state agency appointed by the court to protect and manage an individual's finances or estate. A conservator may also be known as the "Guardian of the Estate." A conservator may be appointed by the court if the individual owns real estate or has a substantial amount of money or property. The conservator is not legally obligated to use his or her own money or property for the individual's care or support.
