Here are the general steps required to obtain a guardianship and/or conservatorship. Select each step to learn more. Note: This process can vary from state to state. It's important to begin as soon as possible because the process can take a great deal of time. In many states, you can and should initiate the process before the minor turns eighteen so that when the person turns reaches the age of majority, there is no gap in providing the protective care required.
