Q. What is Military OneSource Spouse Education and Career Opportunities career counseling?
A. Comprehensive counseling services are available at no cost to all eligible military spouses through the SECO Career Center. Spouses can contact the SECO Career Center for personalized assistance with their education and career goals.

Q. Who provides career counseling?
A. Career counselors must possess a master’s degree in education, adult education, vocational counseling or human services, as well as a certification from one of the following agencies: National Association of Workforce Development Professionals, National Board of Certified Counselors or National Commission for Certifying Agencies.

Q. Who is eligible for counseling services through SECO?
A. Military spouses of active duty service members of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, National Guard and members of the reserves (regardless of activation status) are eligible for career counseling services.

Q. What is addressed in SECO career counseling?
A. Career counselors can help military spouses with the following:

  • Career exploration — identifying career interests and aptitudes; interpreting career and skills assessments; providing information about today’s job market, job opportunities, portable skills and careers, entrepreneurships and federal employment options
  • Education, training and licensure — learning about education options and licensing or credentialing requirements; identifying, comparing and weighing the costs of potential schools and programs
  • Employment readiness — preparing to join or re-enter the work force; assisting with job search strategies, resume writing, interviewing, networking and self-marketing skills
  • Career connections — connecting with corporations, government organizations and non-profits; leveraging resources for employment opportunities

Q. When are SECO career counselors available?
A. Career counselors are available from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. EDT, Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Military OneSource representatives handle after-hours calls and capture basic information for the SECO career counselor to use when the counselor returns the call the next business day.

A. Military spouses seeking career-counseling services can call Military OneSource at 800-342-9647 to request to speak to with SECO career counselor.

Q. Will I be able to work with the same SECO career counselor each time I call?
A. Depending on your needs, you may work with the same career counselor during more than one session. No matter what, there is continuity of service built in through the use of a case management system. You can also access online tools and resources 24/7 through the MySECO website. Additionally, spouses can search for job opportunities through the Military Spouse Employment Partnership Career Portal.
