DoD Directive 1342.22, "Family Policy," July 3, 2012 This Directive establishes policies, assigns responsibilities, and prescribes procedures on family policy for the DoD. In addition to numerous other family programs, this Directive specifically states that the military components will provide deployment support to help service members and their families successfully manage the challenges of mobilization and deployment.

DoD Instruction 1342.19, "Family Care Plans," May 7, 2010 This Instruction establishes policy, assigns responsibilities, and prescribes procedures on the care of family members of DoD and emergency-essential (E-E) civilian personnel who are single parents; dual-military couples with dependents; or members of E-E civilian personnel who otherwise bear sole responsibility for the care of children under the age of 19; or other personnel with family members who are unable to care for themselves in the absence of the member or E-E employee.
DoD Directive 6400.1, "Family Advocacy Program," August 23, 2004 This Directive establishes the Family Advocacy Program (FAP) and assigns responsibilities for working to prevent family violence, identifying victims of abuse, assessing families experiencing domestic and child abuse, and providing treatment for those families.

This Instruction highlights DoD policy to: (1) promote a culture that encourages delivery and receipt of counseling; (2) eliminate barriers to, and the negative stigma associated with, seeking counseling support; (3) empower leaders to advocate for those in their charge to receive counseling; (4) provide easy access to a continuum of counseling support to include prevention, early intervention, and treatment to enhance coping and build resilience; and (5) view counseling support as a force multiplier enhancing military and family readiness.
