American Red Cross Services for Military Families

For over 130 years, the American Red Cross has provided comfort and support to members of the U.S. military, veterans and their families. They continue that legacy today, serving military families 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in hometowns across America, on military installations around the world and deployed with the armed forces to Afghanistan, Kuwait and Djibou.

Emergency communications

If you have an emergency in your family, contact the Red Cross anytime at 877-272-7337 for assistance. If at an overseas office or a deployed location, contact your local Red Cross staff.

The Red Cross allows service members to keep in touch with their families during emergencies through their network of emergency communication centers and offices across America and around the world. When a family member experiences an emergency, most often the death or serious illness a family member, the Red Cross verifies the emergency and sends a message to assist the command in supporting and notifying the service member. When using this service, you will be asked for:

  • The service members name, rank, social security number and unit address
  • The name of the person with the emergency and its nature
  • How to contact medical authorities so the Red Cross can access and relay the most current information on the family member's emergency

Financial assistance

The Red Cross works in partnership with the military aid societies to ensure military members and their families have access to emergency funds 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from wherever they are located. The Red Cross can also connect families with other potential financial resources. Contact the Red Cross at 877-272-7337 for assistance and more information.

Information and referrals

Your local Red Cross has the resources needed for emergency information and referral services in your hometown.

Disaster assistance

When disaster strikes, the Red Cross is there. Red Cross responds to emergencies every day, helping families who have lost their homes to fire, floods and other disasters, focusing on meeting emergency needs such as shelter, food, and physical and mental health. The Red Cross is there to help military families, wherever they are stationed, if they should experience such a loss.

Worldwide community education

The American Red offers numerous workshops and training classes to assist family members during challenging times.

The Coping with Deployment course was developed out of the Red Cross' continuing commitment to serving military families wherever they reside. This course provides useful information on how to strengthen your ability to respond to the challenges you may encounter throughout the deployment cycle. It was designed specifically for the spouses, parents, older children, siblings and significant others of service members. Coping with Deployments is available in both English and Spanish, at no charge, as an instructor-led course or an online course through the Red Cross Learning Center.

The Reconnection Workshops focus on individual/small group discussion enhancing the likelihood of positive reconnections among family members and the successful re-engagement of the service member in civilian life. The workshops are available to those impacted by a military deployment — service members, veterans and their families, including spouses, parents, siblings and significant others. Each workshop focuses on topic areas service members and their families have found relevant to their experience as they transition back home, like managing anger, supporting children, building communication, reconnecting with others and recognizing post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury. To register for one or all of these valuable workshops, you can email your name, city/state and which workshop(s) you are interested to reconnection@redcross.org.

Red Cross offers a wide variety of courses to help prepare military families from emergency preparedness to enhancing employment skills to include nurse assistance training, CPR/AED training (infant, child and adult), first aid training, swimming instruction, lifeguarding, and water safety instructor and babysitters' training.
