Active Living Overview


Many health problems are the result of our sedentary lifestyles; we sit at our desks, watch television and drive even short distances to avoid exertion. The health benefits of physical activity are undeniable: a healthier heart, stronger bones, more energy, a sense of well-being and even an increase of social contact when we join activities with like-minded exercisers. What do you have to lose, except a few pounds?

This emphasis of the Healthy Base Initiative suggests simple ways that people can increase their activity level with simple changes in their daily routine, like actively commuting, walking to lunch, going to the gym, playing intramural sports or taking up an active hobby, such as hiking. Changing people's mindset from sitting in front of a computer to getting outdoors or participating in a gym routine involves promoting recreational offerings on installations and overlaps with the built environment focus area, as well.
