The Defense Personal Property System: Making Your Move Easier

If you’ve received permanent change of station orders, the next few months are likely to be very busy as your prepare for your move. To help you get organized, the Defense Personal Property System has streamlined the moving process with their website Move.mil. These tips will help you use the online system to simplify your move and manage the process.

Personal property counseling

As a requirement for any Department of Defense personal property move, personal property counseling is traditionally conducted at the Transportation Office on your installation. The counseling session is meant to help you understand your government entitlements and review your responsibilities. Now, using the DoD website, Move.mil, most service members can complete this task online. There are some cases — your first move, for example — in which you will need to visit the Transportation Office personally. To find out if you can use the DPS website for personal property counseling, visit the Accessing DPS page or contact your installation’s Transportation Office.

You can begin the process by visiting Move.mil and following the “DoD Service Members and Civilians” link for step-by-step instructions on creating a login using the counseling guide.

The online counseling guide allows you to enter your shipment into DPS on the “Counseling Office” screen. The shipment application is then forwarded to the nearest Transportation Office, who will verify your shipment information before sending it to the moving company or transportation service provider for booking.

After your shipment is entered, you will receive an email with the name and contact information for your TSP. In most cases, you will set up a pre-move survey and confirm your packing dates directly with the TSP. If you haven’t heard from your TSP two weeks before your scheduled pack date, be sure to contact the Transportation Office on your installation.

Using the Defense Personal Property System website to manage your move

Whether or not you use the DPS website to set up your move, you’ll find tools and information on the site that can help you throughout the process, including the following:

  • How-to guides on different topics, including checking the status of a shipment, requesting a delivery and filing claims
  • Information on personally procured moves
  • Moving information for separating and retiring service members
  • A weight allowance table
  • Tips on how to avoid excess weight charges
  • Service branch policies for personal property moves
  • Transportation Office locator
  • Information on filing damage and loss claims.

Completing the customer satisfaction survey

Once you’re settled in to your new duty station, be sure to complete the customer satisfaction survey on Move.mil. This survey helps ensure that DoD selects the best moving companies to move your personal property. You will receive an email asking you to complete the survey a few days after you’ve received your shipment. More information is available on the DPS website Claims/CSS page.
