Hiring Our Heroes – Job Fairs, Spouse Programs and More!

Hiring Our Heroes was launched in March 2011 by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

This nationwide initiative seeks to help veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment. Working with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s network of 1600 state and local chambers and other strategic partners, Hiring Our Heroes has already helped more than 18,400 veterans and military spouses obtain jobs.

Hiring 500,000 Heroes Campaign

The goal of the campaign is to involve the business community in committing to hire half a million veterans and military spouses by the end of 2014. Eight hundred businesses have pledged to hire 182,000 heroes to date, with 85,000 spouses and veterans hired since 2012.

A list of the organizations that have hired or pledged to hire veterans and military spouses can be found in the Hiring Heroes Quarterly Report. These companies are good targets to pursue as you search for a job. If you apply for a position with any of these organizations, make sure to identify yourself as a military spouse.

Hiring Fairs

Over the past two years, Hiring Our Heroes has held more than 400 hiring fairs. These job fairs are only open to transitioning military, veterans and military spouses.

Military Spouse Program

The Military Spouse Program is a coordinated, nationwide effort to help military spouses pursue their employment and entrepreneurial dreams.

Goals of the program include:

  • Promoting job stability
  • Providing networking, mentoring and training opportunities
  • Sharing best practices and providing opportunities to pool resources for entrepreneurial spouses
  • Supporting efforts to reduce or eliminate licensing and credential barriers.

As part of the U.S. Chamber’s Military Spouse Program, monthly events are scheduled specifically for military spouses. Bookmark the hiring fair schedule to keep abreast of upcoming events in your location.

MilSpouse eMentor Leadership Program

The MilSpouse eMentor Leadership Program is a partnership between ACADEMYWOMEN and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hiring Our Heroes. The program offers an online community where protégés receive career guidance, advice and support from more experienced military spouses, career mentors and military-friendly employers.

Both mentors and protégés complete a profile and provide information on their background and interests.

Protégés can seek mentors, ask questions and participate in discussion groups. When a mentor accepts the invitation to connect from a protégé, they work together to establish goals and develop an action plan. Most connections are online, using the site messaging tool or regular email; however, if they choose, pairs may connect by phone or even meet in person.

Working with a mentor can offer huge benefits to new military spouses, spouses seeking a specific career path, spouses investigating a new career path and spouses interested in becoming entrepreneurs.

Using Resources

The Hiring Our Heroes effort is dedicated to helping military heroes, including military spouses, find employment in every sector of our economy. Their programs and resources may be helpful to you as you seek employment and strive to build your career. New partnerships and continued engagement of the business community should continue to raise awareness of the campaign and increase commitments to hire military veterans and spouses across our nation.

Visit the MSEP Career Portal and research Partner company information and job listings from over 160 corporations interested in hiring military spouses to fill their open positions.
