TRICARE 101

Benefit overview

TRICARE is the uniformed services health care program for active-duty service members, active-duty family members, National Guard and reserve members and their family members, retirees and retiree family members, survivors and certain former spouses worldwide. The TRICARE 101 website provides links to the available TRICARE plans, eligibility requirements and a care finder.

TRICARE brings together the health care resources of the Military Health System — such as military hospitals and clinics — with a network of civilian health care professionals, institutions, pharmacies and suppliers to foster, protect, sustain and restore health for those entrusted to their care. TRICARE provides comprehensive coverage to all beneficiaries, including health plans, special programs, prescriptions and dental plans.

How to access this benefit

To receive benefits through TRICARE, you must first find the plan that meets your situation. For example, there are different plans for active duty service members and their families, active duty service members in remote locations, plans for overseas locations, plans for members of the Selected Reserve, plans for retired service members and plans for young adults. Once you determine the right plan, you need to enroll in it.

If you have questions or have special circumstances, you can call your regional contractor to discuss. You can also enroll online through the milConnect website. Click on the “Benefits” tab, and then click on “Beneficiary Web Enrollment.” Once enrolled, you will be notified by your regional contractor and you can log in to milConnect to download your enrollment card. Once processed, you can click “Find a Doctor.”
