With many employers authorizing telework due to coronavirus disease 2019, it is important that employees working from home have the necessary tools and work environment to get the job done.
If you are having difficulty accomplishing essential job tasks while working at home due to a diagnosed disabling condition or limitation, you can request a needs assessment to allow the Computer/Electronic Accommodations Program to help identify potential solutions. You will discuss your job requirements, the limitations you are experiencing and learn what may help.
Home office ergonomics
Your home office environment might allow you to work in your pajamas, but it may be lacking in some important workplace ergonomics that can prevent you from doing your job effectively and possibly even exacerbate existing limitations.
Learn how to prepare your home office using the Workplace Ergonomics Reference Guide 3rd Edition. This guide provides illustrations of proper workstation ergonomics, a checklist for implementation of these strategies, and tips for the prevention of repetitive stress injuries.
It’s important to bring workplace ergonomics to your home by:
- Setting up your workstation and work surface properly
- Having your monitor in the right place
- Using proper lighting
- Sitting in a fully adjustable chair
Having the right ergonomics in your home office can increase your productivity and improve your satisfaction and overall sense of well-being.
If you have a newly identified limitation such as vision loss, hearing loss, memory loss or a physical condition, like arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome, contact CAP.
If you have received accommodations from CAP in the past and require additional equipment to telework, CAP may be able to help. Submit a new request and receive duplicates of what you have at your work location or consider alternative solutions that may be better for your telework location.
Additional CAP services
CAP has added additional services to make sure you get the tools you need. CAP currently:
- Provides access to equipment, including ergonomic keyboards, lumbar support devices and screen magnification software at no cost to the employing agency
- In many instances, ships requested accommodations to your telework locations instead of the agency office
- Extends the deadlines for medical documentation requirements
- Gives needs assessments via telephone and email
- Helps identify the most appropriate tool for your situation
