Other Legal Issues – The Essentials
The information contained on this website is designed to educate and inform service members and their families on their personal legal affairs. Nothing contained in the website is a substitute for the competent legal advice of a licensed attorney. Service members and their families seeking legal advice should consult the staff of the nearest installation Legal Assistance Office.
Preparing a will and filing adoption papers aren’t the only occasions for which you’ll likely need the help of an attorney. Legal assistance is useful in a variety of situations, from reviewing leasing agreements to designing a family care plan.
Find free legal assistance available to you, which can be helpful in a wide range of situations, including:
Reviewing leases and rental contracts
An attorney can review your lease or rental contract before you sign it to be sure the terms are acceptable and that the agreement includes any military rental protection clauses for your state.
Requiring notary services
Notaries can administer oaths, witness signatures and take acknowledgements, sworn statements, affidavits and more.
Resolving consumer issues
If you’re having credit problems, suspect you’re the victim of a scam or have a dispute over a consumer issue, legal assistance attorneys can often help you communicate and negotiate with collection agencies, lawyers and other parties.
Getting legal help or referrals on other issues
If you have been charged with driving under the influence on or off your local military installation, you should consult your military defense counsel. They can provide confidential advice while allowing you the right to hire a civilian defense attorney. If you are facing criminal charges off-installation, then the military defense counsel cannot represent you in civilian court.
