6 minute read • March 14, 2022To use MilTax software, you must first log in to your Military OneSource account. This page offers step-by-step instructions for getting started and troubleshooting access if you’re having issues.
Create a Military OneSource Account
New users must create a Military OneSource account to access MilTax software and other online tools.
Step-by-Step Instructions- Scroll to the footer on this site and click “Create an Account.”
- Read the DOD Notice and Consent page, click the radio toggle button to agree, then click “Proceed to Login.”
- Fill out the form fields on the user registration page.
- Select and answer three security questions.
- Click the blue “Register” button on the bottom of the page.
- Wait to be redirected and look for a green box noting your successful registration.
- Watch your inbox for an email from event_notifier@gcc.militaryonesource.mil.
- Click the account registration link in the email.
- Enter your email address and password on the login page.
- Click “Login” right below where you entered your password.
- Enter additional information to complete your user profile.
- Associate your CAC card or ECA credential with your account.
- Click the blue “Save and Continue” button to complete your account set-up.
Pro Tip: It’s smart to associate your CAC or ECA credential with your Military OneSource account so you can use it for future logins. If you don’t, the system will require you to reset your password every 60 days for security purposes. Do your future self a favor — link your CAC or ECA credential today.

Get to MilTax Software
Get to your MilTax software account or create a new one to get stated on your tax return. This account is separate from your Military OneSource account.
Step-by-Step Instructions- Go to MilitaryOneSource.mil/MilTax.
- Click the red button that says “Log in to Start.”
- On the login page, type your email address and password, then click “Login.”
- On the MilTax starter page, answer the question about VITA and any other questions.
- Click “Continue to MilTax Software.”
- In the pop-up window, click “Access MilTax Software.”
- In the new window, log in to the software with an existing account or create a new one.
Pro Tip: Your MilTax account is separate from your Military OneSource account, and you’ll need to log in to Military OneSource every time you want to access MilTax. It’s the only way to access the free, military version of the software.

Troubleshooting MilTax
Unlock a Disabled Military OneSource AccountIf you thought you knew your password and entered an incorrect guess, you might get an error that says “Your account is currently disabled.” Here’s how to get your account up and running again.
- Click “Click Here” in the brown error box.
- On the technical support contact form, note your need for an account reset.
- Enter your name and email address. Only the fields with an asterisk are required.
- Click the blue “Submit” button at the bottom of the page.
- Look for a green message noting your successful request submission.
- Watch your inbox for the reset email. It will come within 30 minutes and expire in 24 hours.
- Click the link in the email to reset your account.
- Enter your email address and the token — the string of numbers and letters — provided in the email.

Reset an Expired Military OneSource PasswordUsers are required to update their Military OneSource account password every 60 days. Here are step-by-step instructions.
- Go to the Military OneSource sign in page.
- If the DOD Notice and Consent page comes up, read it, click the radio toggle button to agree, then click “Proceed to Login.”
- Click “Forgot Your Password” on the Military OneSource login page, then click “Continue.”
- Answer the three security questions.
- On the password reset page, enter a new password that meets the requirements and click “Change Password.”
- Wait for the page to refresh and look for a message noting your successful reset.
Don’t know the answers to your security questions?
- Click on the “Reset Security Information” at the bottom of the page.
- Watch for an email with a token — a string of numbers and letters.
- Enter the token to go to the reset page.
- Select and answer three security questions, then click the “Continue” button at the bottom of the page.
- On the password reset page, enter a new password that meets the requirements and click “Change Password.”
- Wait for the page to refresh and look for a message noting your successful reset.

Work Around a Security ErrorIf you receive a security error when trying to access a Military OneSource web page, your browser may be incompatible with the website’s DOD security certificates.
- Click “Proceed” to continue past the security warning OR
- Try a different browser, such as Google Chrome.
