Get energized about all the resources for recreation available to service members and their families. Take advantage of all the information and programs for relaxation, entertainment and fun.

Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program

Your installation’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program should be your first step in planning leisure and recreation. MWR facilities have resources and amenities, including some of the following:

  • Swimming pools: Enjoy some recreational swimming, take swimming lessons or try an aquatic fitness class.
  • Bowling facilities: Join a league or rent a lane for a few games.
  • Golf courses: Play golf on some of the nicest golf courses you'll find. If you're a beginner, book a lesson with the pro.
  • Recreation centers: Enjoy some pickup ping-pong or big screen entertainment.
  • Trails: Hike, bike or walk and enjoy the great outdoors.
  • Craft and hobby shops: Rent stall space and work on your car at the auto skills center. Look for woodworking, ceramics, painting classes and more at craft and hobby programs that may be stand-alone facilities or offerings at recreation centers or libraries.
  • On-site and digital libraries: Peruse the selection of books, magazines, DVDs and audiobooks at your local library. Access the latest online resources, databases and online tools for financial information, school research, tutoring and more with the MWR Digital Library.
  • Movie theaters: Catch Hollywood's latest releases.
  • Outdoor and recreation rental centers: Try out their gear before investing in your own.
  • Information, Tickets and Travel: Check out all of the local sights, attractions and amusements with this invaluable service that offers trip planning assistance, information on popular travel destinations, and savings on lodging, entertainment and more.

Boys & Girls Club of America

Military services partner with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to provide access to youth centers and clubs around the country.

A typical club has an arts and crafts area, gymnasium, library, game room and multipurpose room. Some clubs have swimming pools, computer learning centers, camps and outdoor play areas, too. Whether you live on or off the installation, children between the ages of 6 and 18 can participate in Boys & Girls Clubs programs:

Installation youth center services

Eligible service members and their family members may take advantage of an installation's youth center services. Each youth center varies and most offer the following:

  • Computer labs for games, homework, social media and more
  • Special field trips to the movies, bowling or local attractions
  • Gymnasiums for safety-supervised sports with other children their age
  • Fitness rooms for working out and working off stress
  • Music rooms for recording music
  • Game rooms for playing pool or board games with friends
  • Volunteer and employment listings for that perfect after-school job or volunteer position

Single service member programs

If you’re a single, junior enlisted member, you’re in luck. There is always something going on for singles. Some installations offer exclusive recreation centers, and most offer events, activities and trips. Check out the following programs:

Department of Defense camps

The Department of Defense offers a variety of fun camps for children of all ages that may be a great addition to your child's summer lineup:

  • Teen adventure camps: Teens ages 14 to 18 can enjoy adventure camps that partner with universities around the country. They include wilderness excursions, like sailing, kayaking and survival camp.
  • Deployment camps: Children of deployed service members can build a support network of other military youth who may have similar experiences and learn skills to help manage the ups and downs.
  • Installation camps: Camp fun may be just around the corner on your local installation. To find a camp or summer activity on your installation, visit MilitaryINSTALLATIONS.

4-H Military Partnerships

  • 4-H Military Partnerships bring the resources of the Land Grant Universities, including youth development professionals, research-based curricula, and high-quality training and technical assistance to the youth programs of the military.
  • Military youth can join 4-H clubs in their community, and they can also participate in summer camps around the country.

Operation Purple® Camp

  • Operation Purple Camp from the National Military Family Association brings together military kids from all services and offers a Family Retreat that provides military families with a chance to reconnect and bond.

Morale, Welfare and Recreation Digital Library

  • Take advantage of the many databases and resources available as part of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Digital Library.
  • A free service for military members and their families, it has something to offer every member of your family. Just log into your Military OneSource account or create a username and password to get started.

Morale, Welfare and Recreation Summer Reading Program

  • Students who keep reading in the summer score higher on achievement tests than non-readers. Inspire literacy and lifelong learning by enrolling your kids in the Department of Defense-MWR Summer Reading Program. Contact the program at 877-565-1896.

Military OneSource health and wellness coaches

Fitness resources

Take advantage of several fitness resources available to service members and their families on many installations:

  • 24-Hour Fitness: This program offers an opportunity to work out for people who are unable to use standard facilities. Satellite fitness centers are located on installation with limited equipment and are open 24/7 with common access card accessibility.
  • Fitness On Request: This initiative offers a wide array of fitness class options and the ability to exercise in a group setting at any time.
  • Bike Share: This program provides specially-marked bicycles in convenient locations around the installation for service members and personnel to use for transportation or recreation.
  • StairWELL to Health: This program offers information and opportunities for incorporating physical activity into daily routines.
  • High Intensity Tactical Training and Aquatic Maximum Power Intensive Training: HITT and AMPIT improve combat readiness, while reducing the likelihood of injury through physical fitness training and nutritional guidelines.
  • Adult Sports Program: This intramural sports program provides fun, team-oriented recreational fitness opportunities to help keep service members in shape.
