The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. SAMHSA leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. It strives to improve the lives of individuals living with mental and substance use disorders, and their families. SAMHSA’s mission includes:

  • The Behavioral Health Treatment Services Locator is the first step to finding appropriate services, conveniently located near home or the workplace.
  • The National Helpline — 1-800-662-HELP (4357) — provides 24-hour free and confidential treatment referral and information about mental and/or substance use disorders, prevention and recovery in English and Spanish.
  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a SAMHSA-funded, toll-free hotline available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The lifeline is available in more than 150 languages. Call, chat or text 988.
  • SAMHSA’s Disaster Distress Helpline offers assistance from the nearest crisis center to provide information, support and counseling.
  • The Veterans Crisis Line connects veterans in crisis (and their families and friends) with qualified responders from the Department of Veterans Affairs through a toll-free hotline, online chat, or text. This confidential support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Dial 988 and press 1.
  • The Opioid Treatment Program Directory helps people find local treatment programs by state.
