The military’s free e-filing tax software and support are now available, and for the first time, is open to Coast Guardsmen and their immediate families.
Military OneSource’s MilTax is tailor-made for the military. It’s designed to handle unique tax situations, such as deployments and multistate filings. The Coast Guard became eligible last August for Military OneSource services and support, which includes MilTax.
In addition to free tax software, MilTax provides free personalized assistance from tax professionals trained to address military tax scenarios. Eligible warfighters and their immediate family members can file their federal return and up to five state returns at no cost. Survivors and recent veterans up to 365 days from their separation or retirement date are also eligible for MilTax.
First-time MilTax users report high satisfaction and say they plan to return in future years. In their feedback, users point to knowledgeable consultants who help identify eligible deductions and military-specific tax reliefs that can result in significant savings.
Along with eligible Coast Guardsmen, more than 2 million active-duty, National Guard and reserve service members are eligible for MilTax, according to the 2023 Demographics Profile of the Military Community.
MilTax eligibility is verified through the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, or DEERS.
