Using Your Military ID

Overview

Your military ID is more than just a form of identification — it’s official proof of your military affiliation, a secure key to accessing bases and facilities, and your gateway to essential services, benefits and discounts. Understanding how your military ID works can help you make the most of your military life.

Types of military ID cards

Depending on your role, you will have a certain type of military ID.

Common access card

A CAC is the standard ID card for active-duty service members, reserves, DOW civilian employees and eligible contractors. Your CAC grants you access to military bases and networks.

Next Generation Uniformed Services ID card

A USID is issued to military dependents, such as spouses and children, and is used to access benefits and base privileges.
