Resources for preparing for deployment, relocation and other relationship stressors

Deployment: You can ease some of the stress of deployment by preparing for separations. These resources can teach spouses strategies to help your family adjust during deployment:

  • Pre-deployment Support is a presentation that lists all the resources and services available to service members and their families as they get ready to deploy. The document offers specific resources for spouses, significant others and children.
  • "Staying Positive During Your Partner's Deployment" is an article with resources and tips on how to grow individually and as a family through a deployment.

Relocation: Military families move every two to three years. Whether you aren’t used to it or you are an old pro, relocation can be disruptive. These resources can help you manage the move more smoothly:

  • Relocation Assistance Programs and resources can be found at your local Military Family Service Center.
  • MilitaryINSTALLATIONS provides you with information about services and programs available to you on your new installation.
  • Plan My Move is a web-based relocation tool that lets you estimate moving expenses, keep a calendar of events, find forms that you need and use other planning tools to make your move go smoothly.
  • Spouse Relocation and Transition helps you navigate the relocation and transition process. Military OneSource offers personalized support for military spouses through specialty consultations. Call 800-342-9647.

Changing careers: Spouses may have to place their careers on hold or change careers completely when they relocate to a new area. These resources can help you manage career-change challenges:

Struggling family members: If your children or your family are struggling, you're not alone. There is a lot you can do to build your family's resilience. In its publication, "The Road to Resilience," the American Psychological Association recommends 10 ways to become more resilient when dealing with stress or adversity.

Resilience training and support: FOCUS, or Families OverComing Under Stress, offers support for couples and parents in readiness for tomorrow. FOCUS builds on each relationship's current strengths and teaches new strategies that support resilience. During FOCUS, couples practice perspective-taking and become closer by developing a shared understanding of their experience. FOCUS services are available through the virtual TeleFOCUS program, allowing couples to meet with a FOCUS Provider using video teleconference.
