Episode 1: Exceptional Family Member Program Overview, Enrollment and Disenrollment

Join us for the introductory episode of the Office of Special Needs EFMP & Me podcast series to learn more about OSN and the Exceptional Family Member Program. In this episode, we will break down the components of EFMP and how and why military families enter or exit the program. We will also explore the EFMP & Me tool and its benefits to military families with special needs and the service providers and leaders who support them.

Episode 2: Education

In Episode 2, our subject matter experts offer information, tips and resources focused on services associated with educational special needs and early intervention services and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA. The information can help you navigate between the special education needs of your family member and the demands of living a military life. You’ll also learn more about the education checklists available on the EFMP & Me tool and how to use them.

Episode 3: PCS

A PCS move is stressful under the best of circumstances and families in EFMP often face additional challenges and concerns when they move. Our experts for Episode 3 will share tips, resources and information that can help you prepare for your next move, and provide insight on smoothing the medical and education transitions that can arise whether you’re moving to a new state or a new country.

Episode 4: Legal and Long-Term Financial Planning (Part 1)

Learning how to prepare financially and legally for your family’s future is so important for every military family. Starting early is critical, especially when you have a special needs family member who may require long-term care or other considerations. Understanding financial planning, transition to adulthood, secondary dependency and more can help guide your decisions moving forward. Part 1 of this two-part conversation focuses on wills, special needs trusts and legal and financial assistance available on installations.

The topic of our final episode of this season is caregiving. Learn why healthy caregiving is so important. Caregiver duties take an emotional and physical toll on caregivers and it’s important to practice good self-care, learn to ask for help and understand that you are not alone. Find tips, resources and information to get support, build community and live your best life, both as a caregiver and as an individual.
