The inTransition Program

Benefit overview

The Defense Health Agency inTransition program helps service members and veterans connect to mental health care when going through a transition or when seeking care for the first time. It is available to active-duty, reservists and National Guard members as well as veterans and retirees. The inTransition program is free and confidential.

How this benefit helps

InTransition coaches are skilled counselors who understand military culture. They guide service members and veterans who are transitioning their mental health care. They also help those who are establishing care for the first time navigate the Defense Department, Department of Veterans Affairs and community health care resources.

The inTransition program helps those who are:

  • Relocating to another assignment
  • Returning from deployment
  • Transitioning from active duty to reserve component or reserve component to active duty
  • Preparing to leave the military
  • In need of a mental health provider for other reasons

How to access this benefit

All service members who received mental health or behavioral health services within 12 months of separation from the service are automatically enrolled in inTransition. Service members and veterans may also be referred to the program.
